The Trap of What’s Easy

Many times, the solution is right in front of us…
and still, we don’t see it.

Or worse: we sense it, but choose not to look it in the eye.

Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher, said:
“The difference between unconsciousness and bad faith is very subtle.”

Unconsciousness is not knowing.
Bad faith is suspecting… and looking away anyway.

Why do we choose not to see?

If we were fully aware of what we’re doing —to ourselves, to others, to the world—
perhaps we couldn’t keep acting the way we do.
And that’s the core: we benefit from sustaining our own self-deceptions.

Each of us has our own:

  • Avoiding conflict
  • Needing to be right
  • Not facing pain
  • Avoiding real responsibility for our actions

Generalisation as an excuse

Speaking in abstract terms, generalising, pointing at what “others do” —is a way to avoid speaking about yourself.
To avoid getting involved.
To stay on the surface.

In Gestalt, we prefer to speak in the first person.
Because real change begins when you take responsibility.
When you stop hiding behind empty talk and start expressing what you truly feel and need.

The easy way is tempting, but…

We often choose what seems easier:

  • Going along with things
  • Pleasing others
  • Staying silent
  • Not asking too many questions

But easy is not always good.
Sometimes, easy is a trap.
A false comfort that costs us dearly: our authenticity, our joy, our real life.

Are you living from what you want… or from what you avoid?

Between a smile that hides an uncomfortable truth and a “it’s fine if I do it again”,
your life can slip away.

Real freedom doesn’t lie in what’s most comfortable.
It lies in daring to look, to feel, to choose from a more conscious and authentic place.

A process to break free from your own traps

Gestalt therapy helps you identify those personal traps that seem to protect you today,
but in truth, only take you further from yourself.

If you want to start living from a freer and more truthful place, this path can support you.

Do you want to keep exploring?

If this topic resonates with you, you might be interested in opening up space to talk about it in a session. Each process is unique, and it can be helpful to pause, reflect, and put words to what you’re experiencing.
