Connecting with Your Limits

There are moments when we face an internal limit.
We want to move past it, we try… but something inside resists.
Why?
Why can’t we move forward even when we truly want to?

The answer isn’t simple —and it’s rarely magical.
There’s no mantra that will make it disappear.
It’s not just about willpower.
Moving through a limit requires awareness, compassion and listening.

Why do you need this limit?

Instead of asking how to get rid of the limit, in Gestalt Therapy we ask:
Why am I holding on to it?
What purpose does it serve?
Which part of me needs it?

Andrea, for example, is a 50-year-old woman who struggles with financial self-management.
She says:
“I don’t need more techniques. I need to be able to say no to myself, tolerate frustration, set limits. I feel like a 6-year-old every time I overspend.”

So, the work isn’t just about changing surface behaviour.
It’s about listening to the inner conflict and uncovering the hidden need beneath the struggle.

A dialogue between inner parts

In this process, Andrea begins speaking from her critical side —the one that demands and despairs.
But little by little, we reach the more vulnerable part:
“I’m tired of judging myself. If I had to live with someone like me, I’d turn to excess too.”

Both parts are active.
Both want to be right.
And both deserve to be heard.

The goal isn’t to eliminate one side, but to facilitate a dialogue, where they can understand each other and agree on a healthier coexistence.

What we can learn from our limits

When you give yourself the space to listen to your limits without judgment,
you can begin to see what they protect, what they compensate for, and what part of you they defend.

This kind of therapy doesn’t happen through theory,
but through the body, the emotion and the present moment.
And in that contact with your inner polarities, a new level of awareness can emerge.

A process for you, at your pace

If you feel like something inside is holding you back, but you don’t fully understand what it is, why it’s there or how to approach it,
Gestalt Therapy can support you in observing, understanding, and transforming that limit into a doorway toward a freer life.

Do you want to keep exploring?

If this topic resonates with you, you might be interested in opening up space to talk about it in a session. Each process is unique, and it can be helpful to pause, reflect, and put words to what you’re experiencing.
